Making web sites accessible

Background

Web sites and web pages designed and hosted in the United Kingdom are subject to the provisions of the Disability Discrimination Act 1999. This means that web sites must be accessible to people with disabilities, in particular those who are completely blind and those with visual impairment.

It is also good practice to make web pages that do not disadvantage people who are dyslexic and those who are colour blind.

The World Wide Web Consortium has set out extensive standards for making web sites accessibile. The W3C has provided a checklist of points for web content accessibility.
